Day 1:
This 4-day tour takes you into the north of KwaZulu-Natal where you will visit famous battlefield sites and enjoy a Big 5 safari experience. Along the way you will encounter museums, memorials, and historic battlefields dedicated to the wars between the British, Boers, and Zulus before finishing the tour with wildlife experiences at a private game reserve.
3 Nights 4 Days Battlefields & Babanango Safari Tour
Close to the small town of Dundee in the picturesque province of KwaZulu-Natal lies the Blood River Heritage Site, considered one of the most unique battlefields in South Africa.
On 16 December 1838, 464 Voortrekkers and their servants defeated King Dingane’s approximately 10,000 Zulu warriors. The Blood River Heritage Site hosts a museum exhibition depicting the narrative and history of the battlefield. There is also a unique bronze wagon laager on display along with a granite wagon monument representing the Afrikaners.
Across the river, the Ncome Museum houses exhibitions about the Zulu people, their culture, and a short DVD presentation at the information centre about the Battle of Blood River.
You will also visit Talana Heritage Park, which houses 17 buildings displaying the impact of Boer, British, and Zulu combat history. Restored homesteads, garden headstones, South Africa’s first coal mine, a locomotive, weapons, uniforms, photographs, an original hand-built wagon, and one of the only two wooden wool presses left in South Africa all tell stories from the past. Day 2:
3 Nights 4 Days Battlefields & Babanango Safari Tour
The Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January 1879 was the first major encounter in the Anglo-Zulu War between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom.
Eleven days after the British invasion of Zululand began in South Africa, a Zulu force of approximately 20,000 warriors attacked a portion of the British main column consisting of about 1,800 British, colonial, and native troops, as well as approximately 400 civilians.
Despite being equipped mainly with traditional assegai iron spears and cow-hide shields, the numerically superior Zulu forces overwhelmed the poorly led and badly deployed British troops.
The tour then progresses to the Battle of Rorke’s Drift, also known as the Defence of Rorke’s Drift, a famous battle of the Anglo-Zulu War.
The defence of the mission station at Rorke’s Drift immediately followed the British Army’s defeat at Isandlwana on 22 January 1879 and continued into the following day.
The final stop is Fugitives Drift and the Queens Colours Memorial before travelling to Babanango Game Reserve for a sunset safari and overnight stay.
Day 3:

Enjoy two 3-hour Open Vehicle Game Drives at Babanango Game Reserve — one in the morning and one in the evening.
Over the past five years, Babanango Game Reserve has undertaken one of the largest game translocation projects in South Africa, selectively sourcing over 3,000 large mammal species and reintroducing them back into wilderness areas where they once roamed freely.
The reserve has successfully reintroduced a wide variety of endemic species, including endangered black rhino, rare antelope such as oribi and klipspringer, and in 2023 reintroduced elephants to complete the “Big Five” — lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, and elephant.
Day 3:
3 Nights 4 Days Battlefields & Babanango Safari Tour
After breakfast, guests will check out and enjoy a slow scenic drive back to Durban, marking the end of the tour.
